We’ve been blessed with some pretty sensational Tuscan reds this year, and at under $30 a bottle this is one of the best Super Tuscan deals we’ve seen to date. Ornellaia’s le Volte, their baby bottling, same vineyards and winemaking team as the $200 a bottle stuff, but at a more everyday price point.
I took a bottle of this home to taste (drink) with my wife. She’s been in the wine business as long as me and used to live in Italy, so she really enjoys great Italian wine. “Wow, that just smells like Tuscany” she exclaimed as she put her nose to the glass. Upon first sip, “How much of this can get for us?” Let’s just say with two wine fridges at home overflowing with bottles, it’s not often that she tells me to buy more wine…
A harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese this is a quintessential Super Tuscan with broad appeal. Fermented in stainless steel then aged in a combination of barrique and cement tanks for 10 months, there’s just enough structure and body to hold up to rich meat dishes, or classic pasta and red sauce. Yet there’s a velvety easy going nature about it too, its great by itself. The tannins are ultra-fine, the finish is long and seamless, making it really hard to resist once you take your first sip. I’m sure you good age this another 5+ years, but it’s downright delicious right now!
