95% Nerello Mascalese grown in the rich volcanic soils of Mt. Etna. A relative of Sangiovese, Nerello Mascalese possesses the same fruity bursts of flavor as well as the thin skins that make them excellent carriers for terroir. In this case- the volcanic minerality of an active volcano! While it sounds like growing grapes directly under the bursting caldera of under one of the most temperamental volcanoes in the world is horrifyingly risky, the thick ash that fills the sky during one of Etna’s frequent explosions covers the vines and earth and acts almost as a fertilizer.
This means that the soil and air, full of volcanic residue, seep through the thin skin of Nerello Mascalese grapes infusing them with a primordial igneous minerality that feels straight from the volatile mantle underneath Mt. Etna. The clashing tectonic plates that send magma flying into the stratosphere are what make Mt. Etna’s wines some of the most cerebral in the world- combining deep fruit flavors with a robust and powerful earth.
Lavish fruit combined with the uniquely beautiful tones of igneous rock and ash makes this wine truly exceptional. Terre Nere’s Etna Rosso reflects the entire incredible geography of Mt. Etna, selecting from contradas of all elevations and ages, including 140 year old vines that survived Phylloxera, protected by the harsh soils of the mountain. After a meticulous sorting process, the Etna Rosso is then sees 18 months in French oak before being bottled, giving it a firm structure to balance it’s incredible power.
This is a volcano in a bottle. A light, perfumed nose erupts into ripe red fruit flavors and before transitioning to an igneous, earthen finish. As the wine opens, the fruit and earth only become more pronounced, showing the beautiful contrast of delicacy and power that embodies Etna Rosso. This is a wine to enjoy now, but will also age beautifully for years to come.
James Suckling: 95 Points
The brightness, lovely density and focus come through clearly here with an almost pinot sensibility and a long finish. It’s polished with fine tannins and a brilliant texture. Mostly grapes from San Lorenzo and Calderara Sottana vineyards. Drink or hold.

“The 2023 Etna Rosso seduces with a burst of ripe cherries, cloves and sweet rose aromas. This is an energetic and wickedly fresh effort with a cascade of wild berry fruit and crunchy mineral tones that flow beneath an air of violet inner florals. A coating of fine tannins frames the finish without slowing its momentum as this tapers off with amazing length and a saturation of raspberry. The 2023 aims to please.”
