Years ago Riccardo Tiberio worked as an export manager for another winery in the region. On his travels through the countryside, he came across a 60 year old vine plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese. Old vines are a treasure trove in their own right, but these were more significant because these vines were an ancient massal selection of the rare Trebbiano Abruzzese. Riccardo knew he had a goldmine… so he promptly quit his job and made the plunge, adding new plantings of Montepulciano, Pecorino, and more Trebbiano Abruzzese.
In 2008, he handed over the reins to his son and daughter. Antonio handles most of the farming and vineyard management, and Cristiana is responsible for the winemaking. Cristiana learnt from the best too! She traveled across Europe gaining knowledge working with Jacques Selosse in Champagne, Nicolas Joly at Coulee de Serrant, and Egon Muller in the Mosel, before returning to her family’s estate. Structure and minerality are the hallmarks of her style.
Cristiana only uses the best juice for this wine – the “free-run” juice that flows from the weight of the grapes crushing themselves, as opposed to pressed juice. This free-run juice is simply more flavorful, and not diluted or affected by the bitterness found in the skins and seeds of the grapes. The result is absolutely stunning. The scintillating, light yellow wine explodes with aromas of apricot, grapefruit, jasmine and orange blossom. To these we add flavors of Granny Smith apple, almonds and a hint of anise, all finishing super crisp, clean and, dare I say, “zippy”!

"A massal selection of the abandoned vineyard discovered by Cristiana Tiberio and her father in 1999, this is unusual in using the local Trebbiano Abruzzese rather than the much more widespread Trebbiano Toscano. It's a vibrant, fresh and zesty expression, with sapid fruits and the variety's typical high acidity. Juicy apricot, mango, apple and orange peel are cut through by a lick of lime juice, all softly cushioned by some subtle leesiness in the background. Enjoy now or give it more time in the bottle to show what this grape is truly capable of. Drinking window 2025-2030 “ James Button

“The 2023 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo opens with a vivid bouquet of yellow apples, incense, chamomile and a dusting of confectionery spice. It contrasts salty mineral tones, sour lime and Granny Smith tartness with juicy acidity to create a tense yet zesty performance on the palate. This leaves a citrusy concentration that puckers the cheeks as hints of sour melon fade. Masterfully done. In my opinion, the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is one of the most overlooked and underrated wines in the Tiberio portfolio. Drink 2024-2030.”
