Tikves - Bela Voda 2018
Price: $26.99
70% Vranecet and 30% Plavec. Okay… so… maybe you aren’t quite up to snuff yet on the grapes… let me help…
Tikves is the oldest winery in Macedonia, producing wine since 1885! A lot has changed since then, but the one thing you can never change is location. And Macedonia is cut from the same geological cloth as Campania in Italy, Roussillon in France, and Priorat/Montsant in Spain. Toss in a load of venture capital, one of the world’s most renowned oenologists, some seriously old native grapes and you’ve got the recipe for the Next Big Thing!
Close your eyes and you would swear this is a Zinfandel in front of you. Which is no surprise considering Plavec shares some DNA with California’s Zinfandel. In fact, Zinfandel is one of the parent grapes of Plavec! So you get juicy aromas and flavors - ripe blueberry and spicy brambly fruit, along with spices and a whiff of incense. The Vranecet adds a Rhone-like essence, akin to a top-rate Gigondas, with its ripe kirsch-y black cherry and black raspberry fruit and wild earthy and charcoal spice. Savory notes back up all the fruit, giving this wine impressive complexity. I would be this will improve over the next 2-3 years and last another 5+ beyond that, but I think it’s going to be tough to leave this alone! After all, aren’t you going to want to open this for company and show off a little bit?
I’d pair this with the same dishes as you’d normally serve with Vranec/Plavec blends. What, no help from Grandma on that one? OK, go for rich, sumptuous meat dishes, like venison in wild berry sauce, or wild boar, or lamb chops crusted with mint. The winery suggests beef stroganoff! Go home, and go big!
