The picture tells the story… Poggio al Tufo is located in the Maremma region on the Tuscan coast. It is known for its volcanic soil – aka “tufo”. Observation alone tells you this isn’t a very fertile area. Which, in the wine world, means it’s perfect! Easy draining and high in minerals, the soil produces small berries possessed with high acidity. The small berries lead to intense, concentrated wines. In the cool coastal climate of Maremma, this provides a wonderful balance. The wines are intense, but not overly ripe or “fruity”. At a shade over 13% alcohol, this is a throwback to Cabernet Sauvignon from a decade or two ago.
For me, THIS is exactly what I want to drink! Blackberry jam, black pepper, licorice… a hint of vanilla, wild herbs and minerality… fine tannins on the finish that are present, but silky.
For less than $20? Sigh… brings back memories of my first forays into Cabernet some 30 years ago! With a little savings on the bottle, you can splurge on some quality, dried porcini mushrooms. Sweat some shallots, sauté the rehydrated mushrooms, add tomatoes, thyme, salt… some of the reserved mushroom water… simmer for a few minutes, then serve… on top of a nice, juicy steak!
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
“Boasts black currant and blueberry fruit complemented by earth, iron and tobacco, while dense tannins provide support. Compact on the finish for now, yet concentrated and long overall.”
