No need to think this one through too much… this gem comes from Ribera del Duero, Spain. I love the region when I am craving a rich red wine, but don’t want to break the bank and/or want something different than my go-to Cabernet Sauvignon. Something not quite as tannic.
What I love about this wine is the balance. Sure, it’s rich and pretty extracted, but it is all kept in check. I think it is the relatively small percentage of new oak – just 13%. So you get the smoky spice notes and vanillin, but it doesn’t overpower the fruit. Which is lovely… blackberry, blueberry and a bright almost citrus note that adds a vibrancy underneath.
Roast lamb would be the local choice, but any roasted meat will do. Or roasted portobello mushrooms if you’re feeling vegan. Heck, enchiladas or pulled pork would be delicious as well. But I’m thinking stew.

The 2021 Celeste Crianza has a dark cherry red color. The nose offers fruit aromas like blueberry jam, as well as notes of cocoa, dried plum, and spices such as vanilla and pink peppercorn. It is light, silky, and supple on the palate.
