Roero where!? Arneis what!? Don’t worry if you have never heard of this delicious gem. The Vietti Arnies is the perfect wine to help you learn all about this refreshing white wine from northwestern Italy.
First lets cover the where; Roero is a small wine producing region just northwest of Barolo, Alba and Barbaresco. Like many other Piedmont wine producing regions it is most known for prized Nebbiolo vineyards. Don’t think for a second that these prideful, culinarily inclined Italians are going to be content with one style of wine. Not at all! In fact some if the most popular wines in our massive Marc Di Grazia tasting(with a dozen winemakers!) were white wines from this area. They may not admit it, but the nearby border with France seems to influence the wines of the Piedmont more than the rest of Italy. So if you are a Burgundy fan, you are luck!
So, what is it? Most importantly it is delicious, crisp, powerful, fresh, aromatic, clean, complex, white wine. This Vietti Arneis is in fact the most compelling Italian white that I have had this year! Arneis is thought by many to be a white mutation of the Nebbiolo grape. They are both extremely aromatic, complex, high acid…and they are extremely finicky, hard to ripen varieties. This hard to farm quality almost led to the grapes extinction. Luckily for us the creative and stubborn producers like Vietti have kept this grape alive, now making some of the most striking white wines in Italy. The Vietti Arnies has the body of a Burgundy, but with more opulent and exotic aromatics. It also has great mineral notes and mouthwatering acidity that allow it to stand up to hearty food. If it sounds too good to be true, you’ll just need to check it out for yourself! The nose opens up with notes of lime, granny smith apple, and hints of jasmine. The rich apple notes mingle with sage and citrus in the mouth, then it finishes with a little mineral streak laced with walnut. Full, refreshing and begging for food pairings! Naturally creamy pasta and rich cheeses are perfect pairings, but charcuterie and truffle…anything truffle…truffle butter on good bread will work! Try some different pairings and let the complexity unfold! Seafood, poultry…go for it!
