Whew! That’s a mouthful, I know! But believe me, this wine is worth the tongue twister! Quite simply, if you love Gruner Veltliner, or light, unoaked Chardonnay, or dry Riesling, or Muscadet, or Sauvignon Blanc...well, heck, if you love white wine in general, you’ll enjoy this! And if your tastes run towards, crisp, mineral-inflected whites, you’ll flat our LOVE it!
So what the heck is it?
“Gemischter Satz” is the name of a field blend that is grown and produced exclusively in Vienna, the only major city in the world that is also a classified wine growing region. The style of wine is well known and popular in the city itself as a delicious, quaffing white, the majority of which is consumed in the city’s many Heuriger, or wine taverns. By law, the wines must be made as a true “field blend.” What that means is the that all the grapes for this wine – and in this case there are four – are all grown alongside one another in the vineyard, and are harvested all at the same time, and co-fermented together. So what does that mean for the wine? Well, this unique little puppy is one of the wine world’s most beautiful examples of the expression of terroir and the vineyard. This field blend of 11 varieties includes Grüner Veltliner, Weißburgunder, Welschriesling, and Chardonnay with small contributions from Riesling, Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, Sylvaner, Traminer, and Neuburger. I can’t tell you how much of each grape make up the blend – because the winery doesn’t even know! While they may be able to count the grape vines at the beginning of the growing season, Mother Nature decides how much goes into the final blend based on the characteristics of the weather and vintage. Pretty cool, eh?
Because a Gemischter Satz consists of many different varieties harvested at the same time, this dry white wine will include some unripe grapes and some overripe grapes and results in a wide range of aromas and flavors. Lemony citrus notes, herbs and white flowers co-mingle with ripe tropical flavors of melon and pineapple. Aromatic but clean and completely bone dry, this delights for its pristine focus and finely etched character. There’s just nothing not to love here.
James Suckling: 95 Points
“This smells like a whole meadow, filled with wild herbs and flowers! Very concentrated yet also very subtle, this has kaleidoscopic notes of yellow, red and white fruit on the finely etched palate. Very long finish, in which the mineral acidity, fine tannins and ripeness are tightly interwoven. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold. Glass closure.”
Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points
“Honeyed richness is carried on the very first whiff. More air then reveals dried apricot, blossom honey and ripe Amalfi lemon zest. The concentrated palate, however, homes in on the zesty part and channels the undoubted richness, almost unctuousness of this wine into fine, clear freshness. This has body and curve, power and concentration but also finesse.”
