Okay… so what have we got? Hermanos de Pecina is an “old school” Rioja producer, committed to traditional practices such as long aging in mostly neutral American oak, open-air racking by hand (trasiego), and long bottle aging, among others. This may seem odd considering the winery was only founded in 1992. But not when you consider that founder Pedro Pecina spent 20 years working for standard-bearer La Rioja Alta. In 2002, he left Rioja Alta to focus on his own project, having gained crucial knowledge of where the best vineyards were.
Now, while the classically aged Crianza, Riserva and Gran Riserva form the backbone of Pecina’s operation, let’s not ignore reality – a young winery needs cash flow! It costs a lot of money to age a wine for 13 years before release! So, here we have an unoaked, young wine ready to rock and roll today. Sort of… you see, while this wine is released young, and certainly delicious for consumption now, it is by no means a “simple” wine for quaffing. Pecina utilizes estate fruit from two of his vineyards near San Vicente in Rioja Alta. Fruit from 15-25 year old vines, organically grown, hand-harvested and fermented with natural yeasts. The vineyards are north-facing, resulting in a longer growing season, more acidity, and a more complex flavor profile. So, while this wine may represent cash flow realities, it is an unbelievable bargain that will drink well for another 10 years! TEN!
A vibrant nose of black cherries, plums and spice give way to a full-bodied wine loaded with dark, juicy fruit and hints of smoky spice and floral notes. For the price, this would be a great pair with lamb burgers off the grill. For the complexity, you could get fancy and serve up some grilled lamb chops or spit-roasted leg of lamb. Hmm… I could go on for days…

"The young, unoaked and fruit-driven red 2023 Señorío de P. Peciña Cosecha Tinto was produced with a majority of Tempranillo with some 3% Garnacha and 2% Graciano from their own vineyards, and it fermented and matured in stainless steel. It has notes of ripe fresh fruit and a smoky/leesy twist, and it comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with integrated acidity, a juicy mouthfeel, very fine tannins and a fruit-driven finish with an herbal twist. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024." - Luis Gutiérrez
