I don’t think there’s anything Chenin Blanc can’t do! It might be the most versatile white grape on the market, and this is a primo example of what makes it so incredible! I’ve gotten real nerdy about Saumur Champigny in previous emails, so I’ll give you the cheat sheet. In short, Saumur has two things that make it a top spot for wine growing- beautifully warm weather and pristine chalk and limestone soils.
For their part, the Legrand family has been making wine in Saumur for ages- with records at least back to the 17th century. Clotilde Legrand, the current winemaker, has delicately balanced the modernization of the property while still preserving the ancient traditions or processes of their estate. Their estate is hand-harvested and sustainably farmed, with the average vine age hovering around 45 years old. The Legrands were also pioneers in using cover crops in their vineyard- not only to maintain soil health but also to challenge their vines into producing lower, higher quality yields.
This translates to a style ripe, deep style of Chenin that revels in its big floral tones and big citrus notes. What I like most here is the sheer density of flavor, buoyed up by a juicy acid that keeps everything perfectly balanced. The signature minerality is there, finishing everything with a clean and fresh energy that sings through the wine- perfect for bright Spring dinners and evenings on the patio as the days get longer!
