Evodia - Old Vines Garnacha 2020
Price: $16.99
Sale Price: $12.99
A project from importer Eric Solomon and winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage, this is another homerun from the duo! Sourced from 40-100 year-old vines! Oh my… the aromas… memory overload… sooo seductive and sexy, oozing cherry liquer, cherry pie, cherries fresh from the tree… Garnacha’s characteristic black pepper spice and smooth tannins will have you slurping this down faster than you probably should have. But, heck, it’s the weekend, right? Well, Wednesday is close enough, right?
With this price point, you don't need to worry about "saving" the wine for a fancy dinner, although this baby will certainly dance the fox trot if you ask it to! For Wednesday nights, maybe pizza, burgers, chili... or my son's favorite, "tachos"; basically nachos with taco meat.
For the weekend, I suggest one of our family's favorites - Family Grill Night. It's named as such because we all go to the grocery and each person picks out what they want. It’s my job to time everything so it all hits the table at once. The only rule is it has to be able to cook on the grill. We’ll get chicken, pork, steak… mussels, fish, scallops… portobellos, peppers, onions… and on and on…
As I said, though, this amazing bottle can also match up with some fancier fare. Duck Breast with Cherry Sauce... Lamb shank served over soft polenta... or take your inspiration from a local restaurant! Google Maps... Calatayud... search for restaurants... then pop on their sites and peruse the menu. at the Hotel San Anton, they are offering up all kinds of grilled gems like lamb chops, tuna. chorizo, morcilla (sooooo good...), and all parts of the pig. Hmmm.... pork belly... anyway, have some fun and drink up!
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
"The 2019 Evodia is pure Garnacha from old head-pruned vines in the Sierra Santa Cruz in Calatayud. It fermented with around 20% full clusters in concrete and matured mostly in concrete with just 20% of the blend put in used oak barrels for three months. There is a component that matured in concrete egg that I was able to taste separately that seems to bring a touch of freshness to the final blend, something welcomed in a warm year like 2019, which seems like a fresher version of 2017, when the wines achieved quite good ripeness. The nose opens up nicely in the glass and is quite aromatic and floral, exuberant, with a heady touch of ripe fruit. It's young and tasty, tender and pleasant to drink, with a forward personality. A real bargain."
