Etna Rosso has this ethereal, poetic quality. It’s in the soil- growing in the nutrient-rich earth surrounding the volcano, the exceptional mineral tones give the wines this razor focus that combine with the wild fruit and herb notes. I love that note from Eric Guido- “Elegance with power” is such a perfect way to describe the wines of Mount Etna. Giuseppe Russo is a true master of the mountain, taming the raw, volcanic energy of his century old vines to make something magical.
Understanding the wines of Mount Etna comes down to understanding the “sciara”- the ancient lava flows that form the contrade (districts) of the region. Each sciara is a unique microclimate, with different soil compositions and biospheres. San Lorenzo, this wines birthplace, is widely considered to be the most sought after. From Giuseppe, Wines here “express not just Etna’s soil but also the very breath of the volcano.”
