Ok... so in the picture here, we are standing in Puligny-Montrachet, on the Chem. de la Parié road just to the west of town. To the left of the drainage ditch is the Puligny-Montrachet vineyard “Les Houilieres”. To the right is "Les Parties".
Can you spot the difference? Other than the vines from Parties are a bit greener and healthier? It's ok. I can't see a difference either. But someone, a long time ago, decided that Houilieres was Puligny-Montrachet, while Parties was not. The difference is in the price tag, of course.
Yet, Domaine Leflaive, one of Puligny’s top producers, sources its Bourgogne Blanc from these two vineyards, blending them together. The lowest US price online for their 2021? $127!!!
Am I telling you this is just as good? Why yes. Yes I am.
“Then why haven’t I heard of them?” Um, because they make such a small amount of wine. We’re talking just 25-75 cases of the various 1er and Grand Crus. Pretty much everything they make is sold from the cellar door to private customers and to a handful of restaurants. Our buddy Craig Baker lucked into them and convinced them to give him some… and now I am passing along the favor.
Anyway… only 500 cases of this are made. 2/3 of the wine is raised in used barrels (1-3 yrs old) and the remainder in tank. Aromas of lemon blossoms give way to flavors of the same along with apple, citrus and just a whiff of vanilla. The mouthfeel is lush and weighty, with spice notes adding to the smoky apple compote flavors. The appellation’s hallmark acidity is vibrant and balances everything nicely. This will drink well for another 4-5 years. This is a classic expression of Puligny-Montrachet – precise, focused and powerful, yet graceful and balanced. Juicy tropical notes combine with white flowers and minerals on the nose, giving way to laser-focused flavors of the same, along with green apple and lemon grass. Bright acidity keeps everything in check and has you coming back for more! This baby demands delicate, yet rich food. Chicken with morel mushrooms would be lovely! Or sea bass on a bed of lentils. Hmmm…
