A delicious bottle and a fabulous value! And here is the secret to this wine's value quotient... it is from the newly declared Cotes du Rhone Villages Sainte-Cecille! So? Exactly? Who has heard of Sainte-Cecille? But here is why you should care... the region abuts Cairanne directly to the West. Cairanne has firmly cemented its status next to the the likes of Rasteau and Vacqueyras, and routinely fetches $30-$40 prices. Here we have similar soil and exposure... with no name-brand recognition! Hence the value!
This is a big, rich, luscious Cotes du Rhone, packed with fruit and exuding pure sexiness. A hefty dose of Syrah (40%) gives this baby more heft than you might expect from a typical Cotes du Rhone. And in addition to the Syrah, Monsieur Besnardeau ages this for six months in large oak barrels (demi-muids). So, to the lush blackberry flavors we are treated to vanilla, spice and everything nice!
“raised entirely in used 300-liter hogsheads. Potent black cherry notes emerge on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe, lush and loaded with extract, and the finish is rounded and tinged with licorice. It's a big, rich Rhône for a bargain price.” WA on 2016
